What is Christmas Crack?

Christmas crack is traditionally a holiday dessert made using Saltines, a caramel or toffee flavored layer, and then followed by chocolate.

Sometimes that’s all there is to it, while other times they’ll be topped with yummy toppings like:

  • Crushed Candy Canes
  • M&Ms
  • Christmas Sprinkles
  • Nuts
  • Sea Salt

The candies are almost always holiday colored so look for reds and greens as a traditional part of this dish.

This pretzel Christmas crack replaces the traditional saltine cracker with pretzels for it’s base instead.

It’s a yummy and easy customization that my kids go crazy for!

Why is it Called Christmas Crack?

Because it’s so addictive? Just kidding! Though it is really addictive!

Christmas crack is called that because of the cracking noise it makes when you break it.

Because it’s a cold dessert it makes a very signature cracking noise when you bite into it or break it into pieces.

What Ingredients Do You Need for White Chocolate Christmas Crack with Pretzels?

An easy recipe for this time of year! Give it as a holiday gift or enjoy this delicious holiday treat all by yourself! I won’t judge!

  • Pretzel Crisps: You can find these at any regular grocery store.
  • Butter: Use unsalted butter as the pretzels are already salted.
  • Brown Sugar: I prefer the flavor of dark brown sugar but you can substitute light brown sugar as well.
  • Vanilla: Pure vanilla flavor will always give you the best flavor.
  • White Chocolate Chips: Pairs perfectly with the other flavors and really makes the peppermint candies stand out!
  • Peppermint Candies: Make sure these are crushed! You can buy a bag of crushed candies or crush the candies yourself.

Pro Tips:

  • Toppings are customizable, add and replace whatever you like!

How to Make White Chocolate Christmas Crack with Pretzels?

White chocolate peppermint pretzels are a great way to indulge your sweet tooth! And that extra crunch is going to be one of your favorite things!

  1. Layer Pretzels: It’s important the pretzels are in a single layer to create the thin Christmas crack.
  2. Make Caramel Mixture: Heating the brown sugar, butter, and vanilla creates the caramel layer.
  3. Bake: Heat in the oven until the caramel is bubbling and then spread on chocolate chips.
  4. Spread Chocolate: Once chocolate chips have melted, cover the entire pan with melted chocolate chips.
  5. Refrigerate: Let the Christmas crack cool for a few hours to get the right texture.

Pro Tips:

  • You can use the broken pretzel crisps in between pretzels. Fill in as much of the base as possible.
  • Pour the caramel mixture very slowly so the pretzels do not move.
  • Non-stick foil will make these a breeze to remove!
  • Cutting is much easier if you remove the entire pan with the foil onto a cutting board.
  • You could also use parchment paper if you can completely cover the bottom and sides of the cookie sheet.

Can You Make White Chocolate Peppermint Pretzel Crack Ahead of Time?

Definitely! Caramel pretzel crack lasts for a while and doesn’t lose its texture or flavor!

I almost always find things taste best within 24 hours so if you’re making it when you really want to wow your guests, consume within then.

But it will continue to taste good and have a good texture for quite a few days so feel free to make it well in advance.

When serving in a cute holiday tin as a gift or putting on a cookie tray, I make big batches at a time so feel free to double or triple the recipe!

What Other Base Can I Use Instead of Pretzels for Christmas Crack?

Pretzels are not the traditional base used for Christmas crack so there are other options you can choose:

  • Saltine Crackers
  • Ritz Crackers
  • Graham Crackers

Saltine crackers are already salty like pretzels so they need no other modifications. This is supposed to be a sweet and salty treat!

Ritz crackers and graham crackers are not salty though so I recommend sprinkling the dessert with a little bit of sea salt.

That should give the perfect balance of salty and sweet you’re looking for.

How Long Does White Chocolate Christmas Crack with Pretzels Last?

You can keep this pretzel crack recipe in the fridge for up to a week.

Always be sure to store it in an airtight container or bag after it’s done cooling completely.

Can You Freeze White Chocolate Christmas Crack with Pretzels?

You can easily freeze this pretzel crack and save it for a long time.

First, let the pieces cool completely. You can do this in the fridge or in the freezer.

Then, cut into pieces or break, whichever one is easiest for you.

Finally, put the Christmas crack candy pieces into a freezer safe bag.

It’s important the candy is completely cooled before bagging.

Otherwise it’ll build up condensation on the inside of the bag and soften the pretzels when they thaw.

You can eat the Christmas crack straight from the freezer or move to the fridge and wait until it’s no longer frozen.

Can Dogs Eat White Chocolate Christmas Crack with Pretzels?

No! Although this recipe is made using white chocolate (which is mostly sugar and milk) it’s still not good for your dog!

Dogs have such a hard time processing sugar and candy and butter.

This can not only cause stomach upset and health problems later on, but it could require a visit to your vet as well.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350*F.
  2. Line a cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Line the cookie sheet with the pretzel crisps in a single layer. Keep them as close together as possible, and use some of the broken pieces in the bag to fill the gaps. You want as much of the surface area covered as possible.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  5. Add the dark brown sugar and bring the mixture to a boil.
  6. Boil for three minutes, stirring occasionally and wiping the sides with a rubber spatula so the sugar doesn’t crystalize or burn.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
  8. Pour the caramel mixture over the pretzels and use a rubber spatula to smooth out over the top.
  9. Make sure each pretzel has caramel covering it.
  10. Bake in the oven for 7 minutes.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool for 2 minutes.
  12. Add the white chocolate chips over the top of the pretzels and caramel, and return to the oven for one minute.
  13. Remove from the oven and use the rubber spatula to smooth the white chocolate out over the top.
  14. While the chocolate is still melted and warm, sprinkle on the crushed peppermint candies.
  15. Let it cool completely and then put the pan into the fridge to set for 2-3 hours.
  16. Remove from the fridge, and pull the foil out of the pan.
  17. For an even look, cut into squares with a knife. If desired, you can break into pieces instead.
  18. Serve immediately or place in airtight container.
