What is Chicken Chop Suey?

Chicken Chop Suey is one of those clean out your fridge meals. The origins of it aren’t quite Chinese and they aren’t quite American either.

Typically it’s made with American vegetables like carrots, celery, or button mushrooms.

Then it’ll include more Chinese vegetables like water chestnuts, bok choy, bamboo shoots, or bean sprouts.

It’s a popular meal you’ll find in most Chinese restaurants.

Exactly how and where it originated is unknown, but I can say that it probably has as many variations as people cooking it!

Some people say it was probably Chinese immigrants using what they had on hand. Others say it was Chinese restaurants adapting meals for the Americans.

It is usually made with whatever veggies you have on hand, a simple sauce, and some meat for a easy stir fry kind of meal.

This version of Chicken Chop Suey is a little American and a little Chinese but a whole lot of yum! I know you’ll enjoy it just as much as we do!

What is In Chicken Chop Suey?

Chinese food doesn’t have to be intimidating! Here’s the easy chicken chop suey recipe you’re going to love!

  • Chicken or Turkey: Any leftover chicken or leftover turkey will work! We’ve also used cooked chicken breast when we don’t have any leftovers.
  • Cream of Celery Soup: This can easily be substituted with cream of chicken if desired.
  • Milk: Any percentage or kind of milk you have in your fridge works in this easy recipe!
  • Soy Sauce: I typically use low sodium soy sauce but any soy sauce you have is great.
  • Bean Sprouts: Be sure to drain your can of bean sprouts before adding to the chop suey.
  • Sour Cream: Yes this chicken chop suey is creamy! And delicious!
  • Parsley: For flavoring. I always use dried because we have it on hand.
  • Onion: We dice the onion small around here! Little kids are much more likely to eat it that way.
  • Water: You’ll need water to cook your rice.
  • Rice: We like Jasmine rice over here. It’s a long grain rice that has great flavor.
  • Butter: Use real butter, no butter substitutes for best flavor.
  • Chow Mein Noodles: For sprinkling on top. This has got to be my kids favorite part!

Pro Tips:

  • Always rinse rice. It comes covered in starch and needs to be cleaned.
  • Feel free to throw any extra fresh veggies in for added nutrition! Leftover vegetables are a great way to pack it in!
  • Leave out the cooked chicken to make a vegetable chop suey.
  • The sauce ingredients I highly recommend not swapping. They make this a favorite dish.

How to Make Chicken Chop Suey

Only three easy steps in this cooking process and you’ll have a complete meal that tastes just as good as Chinese takeout!

  1. Mix: Heat chicken, soup, milk, soy sauce, bean sprouts, sour cream, parsley, and onion.
  2. Cook: Cook the rice in water with butter.
  3. Serve: Serve hot with chow mein noodles and extra soy sauce if desired.

Pro Tips:

  • Cook the rice while the meat and chop suey sauce mixture is cooking so it takes less time.
  • The rice may seem not quite done but it’ll continue to cook and absorb water so don’t overcook it.
  • Use a large skillet because it makes a lot!
  • If you swap for brown rice, adjust the cooking time accordingly.

Is Chicken Chop Suey Healthy?

Chicken chop suey is really as healthy as you make it.

You can cook it with more or less vegetables.

Your can use light soy sauce or regular soy sauce.

It is loaded with protein and healthy carbs.

Chinese recipes are typically high in sodium and not known for their nutrition but that doesn’t have to be the case!

A bounty of veggies are easy to toss in. Leafy greens, green bell pepper, napa cabbage, so many options!

Because this is a homemade meal instead of take out from your favorite Chinese restaurant, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to chop suey.

So go ahead and adjust for your own dietary needs.

Is Chicken Chop Suey Keto Friendly?

Chicken chop suey is normally served with rice or noodles. For the keto diet you need to be low carb.

An easy swap for this is to use cauliflower rice.

I’m no expert on the keto diet though so be sure to check the rest of your ingredients. Low carb is good! High protein is good!

Is Chicken Chop Suey Gluten Free?

To make chicken chop suey gluten free you’ll want to use a gluten free soy sauce.

Options for that include Coconut Aminos or Liquid Aminos.

A very simple swap to make this a gluten free meal!

How to Store Chicken Chop Suey

Store any leftover chicken chop suey in the fridge.

Be sure to keep it in an airtight container to prevent bacteria from growing.

Chicken Chop Suey will stay good for up to 5 days in the fridge. It makes an excellent leftover for a quick and easy lunch.

Can You Freeze Chicken Chop Suey?

Definitely! It’s an easy meal to freeze and thaw later for an instant meal!

To freeze, wait first for the chop suey to cool completely.

Then transfer to an airtight container or bag.

Write “Chicken Chop Suey” on the container, the date you froze it, and how to reheat.

How to Reheat Chicken Chop Suey

You can easily reheat leftover chicken chop suey on the stove or in the microwave.

I haven’t noticed any difference in texture or flavor when reheating using either one.

Typically, if you’re reheating a small portion, it’s easiest just to reheat in the microwave.

If you are reheating a large portion or a big meal, reheat on the stove.

Can My Dog Eat Chicken Chop Suey?

Dogs shouldn’t eat chicken chop suey.

Because the tasty sauce is so delicious, you may be tempted to share some tender pieces of chicken.

But the dairy and salt can really upset their stomachs!

In addition, onions are actually toxic for dogs! Even in small amounts! So definitely don’t share chicken chop suey with your pup.
