What Ingredients Are in Ham and Cheese Empanadas?

Traditional empanadas but with a twist! Here’s what you’ll need from your local grocery store:

  • Empanada Dough: The base of the empanadas.
  • Diced Ham: Leftover ham or use store-bought ham steak. Black forest ham is one of my favorites.
  • Yellow Mustard: Adds a tangy twist to the filling. Just regular mustard is fine.
  • Melted Butter: I recommend real butter whenever you can! Way better!
  • Onion Powder: For flavoring!
  • Swiss Cheese: Melts really well. And goes great with the ham too!
  • Egg: Glossy egg wash means a beautiful golden brown finish.

Pro Tips:

  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking.
  • For evenly cooked empanadas, make sure the ham pieces are small and around the same size.
  • Experiment with different fillings and cheeses to find your perfect combo.

The full recipe is below on the recipe card, but here’s what you need to know:

  1. Combine the ham mixture ingredients in a bowl.

  3. Fold dough and seal the empanadas.
  4. Add a beaten egg wash with a pastry bush to the top of the empanadas.
  5. Bake until golden brown and delicious.

Pro Tips:

  • Don’t overfill the empanada disc to prevent them from bursting in the oven.
  • Use a fork to crimp the edges. I love the decorative seal look!
  • Take your time to crimp the edges properly. They must be sealed before going in the oven.
  • Keep the filling in the center of the dough. The edges should be empty.

What Cheese Could Be Used for Ham and Cheese Empanadas?

Swiss cheese is kind of the traditional cheese you would use for ham and cheese things.

But you can totally feel free to experiment! It’s a great way to find your own “perfect” empanada.

Cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, or even a bit of cream cheese (Yum!)

They will all add a different kind of flavor but you can find what you like the best.

Just be careful to choose a cheese that melts well. That part is important.

In fact they are a fantastic make-ahead option!

Storing these delicious ham empanadas is super easy.

I recommend reheating them in the oven or toaster oven. That way they keep their crispy crust.

Can You Freeze Ham and Cheese Empanadas?

Yes, you can freeze these holiday dinner ham and cheese empanadas either before or after baking.

That might be what makes them the best empanada. That or they are just so darn good.

For unbaked empanadas, freeze them on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag.

Don’t let them touch during their first freeze. That way they won’t all be stuck together.

Baked empanadas can be cooled and then frozen in an airtight container.

Make sure they are totally room temperature before freezing. Otherwise they’ll sweat in the bag.

I really like popping them out of the freezer and eating them if I’ve got a busy morning.
