This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole is a simple twist on a classic dish. Rotisserie Chicken or leftover turkey, leftover ham and yummy stuffing make this a meal the whole family will love. A great way to use up holiday leftovers and it even freezes well too!

I have enjoyed chicken cordon bleu at restaurants and friend’s houses who dared to tackle the seemingly difficult meal when I did not dare take on the task! Luckily, I found a way to get the same great flavors in a way that is fast, simple, and essentially fool proof! 

This Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe is a great way to use up holiday leftovers. This easy to put together dish consists of chicken, ham, cheese, and stuffing!

Since we’re tackling this delightful French dish as a casserole, it does not require you to master the thinning and layering of different meats with cheeses to create a perfect ribbon of flavors. Instead, the casserole comes together quickly and bakes together to create something truly scrumptious. 

This ham and stuffing casserole is a fun twist on a classic recipe. Because it is a casserole, it is super easy to make and less intimidating to tackle! With the modifications to the recipe, this meal becomes something easy to create on a weekday evening, instead of something that might require extra time and master chef skills.

It is easy to put together, and everyone at the table is sure to love it! This recipe is definitely a repeat for our house!

What’s in this Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole recipe? 

This easy Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole recipe has just a few ingredients: 

  • Rotisserie Chicken: You can use any kind of chicken – just make sure it’s either diced or shredded to make it easy to eat in the casserole. This recipe also works great with leftover turkey too so don’t be shy in substituting that ingredient!
  • Ham: Dice it up into nice bite size pieces.  Again, leftovers work great! 
  • Swiss Cheese: Shredded cheese is the way to go for this casserole!  This ingredient has proven to be hit and miss at my local grocery stores.  If you don’t see it, ask someone in the dairy section for help. 
  • Cream of Chicken Soup: You can’t mess this step up! Grab your favorite can of cream of chicken soup for this delicious creamy casserole 
  • Seasoned Stuffing Mix: Again, I love this casserole as a way to use of holiday leftovers, but it’s great at any time of year! Just use your favorite seasoned stuffing mix for this cordon bleu casserole. You could use leftover cooked stuffing or dry 
  • Melted Butter: My favorite part of every recipe: butter makes everything come together and adds that warm rich familiar flavor to this delightful dish.

Just a few simple steps to Cordon Bleu Casserole! 

Step 1: Prep Work.  You want to cut up your ham and chicken or turkey into bite sized pieces.  The goal is to make it so your guests won’t need a knife to cut up their protein!

Step 2: Assemble! Layer your ingredients into a casserole dish! You really can’t mess this step up!  Because your ham, turkey or chicken are already cut up, you really can’t get this step wrong.

Step 3: Bake!  Baking your casserole allows the cheese to melt and your flavors to meld together.  Such an easy and simple meal that your family will love!

Why is it called Chicken Cordon Bleu?

This is a fun language lesson! When you translate “Cordon Bleu” from French, it literally means, “blue ribbon.” The standard chicken cordon bleu recipe consists of wrapping chicken, ham, and cheese together and it looks like a ribbon once you slice it open to reveal the beautiful layers. 

Can I make it Turkey Cordon Bleu? 

Definitely! Since this is a twist on the standard cordon bleu recipe, there’s absolutely no problem mixing up your choice of meat. You could use leftover holiday turkey, or even rotisserie chicken! 

Simply dice or shred up the turkey as your base for the casserole. I love this option, especially right after the holidays. It’s one of my favorite ways to use up leftovers, and keeps things interesting! Turkey Cordon Bleu Casserole is just as delicious as Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole!

Can you freeze cooked Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole? 

Of course! I love finding delicious recipes that can be frozen for later. This makes it easy to prep food ahead of time, which is always ideal for a busy schedule. 

Whether you have kids, or like to make a few meals ahead so you always have something on hand, this chicken cordon bleu casserole stuffing recipe can certainly be frozen for later. 

To freeze, assemble casserole but do not bake. I suggest assembling the casserole in a disposable pan or a casserole dish that you won’t be needing for a while.  Once assembled, cover with a lid or two layers of heavy duty foil. Write cooking directions on top of lid for future reference.

When ready to eat, thaw in fridge for 24 hours then bake according to directions.

Pro-Tip! If you wait to put the stuffing topping on until right before baking, instead of having it waiting in the freezer, the casserole will taste fresher and topping will be a little crispier. It’s still great if you prepare it all the way and then freeze, but I like to save the stuffing for right before baking.

How do you cook frozen Chicken Cordon Bleu? 

This recipe is wonderful, because it is just so simple! Take your frozen cordon bleu casserole out of the freezer and place it in the fridge to thaw overnight. It is important to make sure that your casserole is fully thawed so that it cooks evenly in the oven. 

Once thawed, just keep following along! Bake in the oven, covered with foil for 50 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake again for 15 minutes. This extra 15 minutes uncovered crisps up the stuffing topping — the extra crunch really adds something special. 

To make sure that the stuffing topping is fresh and crisp, pause your recipe prep after pouring the cream of chicken soup on top of the chicken, ham, and cheese.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350*F
  2. Spray a 9x13 casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Place diced rotisserie chicken into casserole dish.
  4. Add diced ham.
  5. Top with shredded Swiss Cheese
  6. In a small bowl combine cream of chicken soup and water. Pour over cheese.
  7. Sprinkle stuffing mix over cheese.
  8. Pour melted butter over stuffing mix.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven and serve immediately.

Very tasty but Too salty with boxed stuffing. I would use regular stuffing out of a bag next time.

We put the stuffing mix on dry, so it adds a nice crunch. But if you don't like crunch, then you can cook it first.
