What Is a Chiffon Pie?

A chiffon pie is a delicious dessert! If you haven’t tried it before, then you’re in for a real treat!

First, it’s got a very light, smooth filling. 

The filling is usually made fluffy with beaten egg whites or whipped cream.

Though we’re going to be using evaporated milk here. It’s delicious! Trust me!

Then it’s stabilized with gelatin. 

And it’s all in a pie crust! 

I love graham cracker crust with it, though other crusts can be used.

What Ingredients Are in Key Lime Chiffon Pie?

This is the best key lime pie and uses ingredient you can find in any grocery stores! 

Here’s what you need:

  • Evaporated milk: Makes a creamy base for the filling.
  • Dry gelatin mix: Helps the pie hold its shape. Get the unflavored one.
  • Sugar: Sweeten up those limes! I don’t recommend brown sugar.
  • Key lime juice and lime peel: Love those tangy flavors!
  • Graham cracker crust: Made from crushed graham crackers.
  • Cool Whip: Thaw before piping around the edges!

Pro Tips: 

  • Opt for key limes rather than Persian limes.
  • Store bought graham cracker crumb crust is just fine! 
  • Or you can make Homemade Graham Cracker Crust. Yum!
  • Condensed milk is not the same! Don’t use it!

How to Make Key Lime Chiffon Pie?

No Bake pies are really some of the best pies! They’re easy to make and can be made in advance!

Is there anything better than that? Here’s how to make this one:

  1. Use a stand mixer with a large bowl and whip chilled evaporated milk to soft peaks.
  2. Blend unflavored gelatin with key lime juice and a little bit of water in small saucepan.
  3. Fold the gelatin mixture into the whipped milk gently with a rubber spatula. 
  4. Pour into the prepared crust, and let it set!

Pro Tips: 

  • Make sure your gelatin mixture is completely dissolved over medium heat.
  • Use a piping bag to make fun designs on the edges of the cooled pie crust.
  • You could also make a design in the center of pie if you wanted to.

Can You Make Key Lime Chiffon Pie Ahead of Time?

Yes, you can make this traditional key lime pie ahead of time!

It’s actually best made a day in advance.

That way it has enough time to chill and set properly.

Which means it’s easier to slice and serve! Yay!

How Long Does Key Lime Chiffon Pie Last?

You have leftover chiffon pie with key limes?

Not to worry! It can stay fresh and tasty for up to 4 days.

Though honestly, if you can keep yourself from eating it for that long, I’ll be impressed!

Be sure to keep it cold. Though you can serve it at room temperature if you prefer.

Just make sure to pop it back in the fridge when you’re done.

How to Store Leftover Key Lime Chiffon Pie?

Leftover no-bake pie should be kept in the fridge.

Be sure to cover with plastic wrap.

Or you can place it in an airtight container.

If you don’t keep it covered, it can absorb other food flavors from the fridge.

Can You Freeze Key Lime Chiffon Pie?

It is possible to freeze key lime pie recipes.

Just keep in mind the texture might change slightly. 

I haven’t done it myself so I’m not entirely sure how it’ll turn out.

The flavor should be the same, just the texture might not be quite as light and airy.

So wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe container.

Is Key Lime Chiffon Pie Gluten-Free?

Everything in this pie is already gluten free except the crust.

To make this chiffon mousse type key lime pie which is gluten-free, simply replace the graham cracker crust.

Choose any gluten-free alternative.

I think one made from gluten-free graham cracker crumbs would still taste just as great.

Is Key Lime Chiffon Pie Healthy?

Well it’s a dessert! So it’s got sugar and fat. 

I wouldn’t exactly say it’s part of a low calorie diet.

Now that I’ve told you that though, I’ll tell you this: key lime juice is full of vitamin C!

So it’s not all bad.

Just enjoy it as part of a balanced diet, especially on special occasions.

This pie goes really well with a some toasted coconut or heavy cream.

Cook Time 2 minutes
Additional Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 2 minutes

Instructions

  1. Pour evaporated milk in a mixing bowl, place in freezer until ice crystals form (about 30 minutes)
  2. Sprinkle gelatin over water and key lime juice in a small saucepan. Let stand for 1 minute.
  3. Stir in sugar and cook over medium heat until all sugar is dissolved (about 2 minutes)
  4. Stir in key lime rind.
  5. Beat evaporated milk at high speed with an electric mixer until soft peaks form.
  6. Gradually add gelatin mixture, beat at high speed until mixture is combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Pour mixture into crust.
  8. Cover and chill one hour or until set
  9. Garnish with sliced key limes (optional).
