Homemade Instant Pot Baked Beans is hands down the EASIEST way to make baked beans from dried beans!  This simple recipe will take your dried beans and turn them into creamy flavorful baked beans in less than 2 1/2 hours! SO EASY!

Ahh, baked beans, the ultimate side dish. If you’re looking for an amazing baked bean recipe, you have come to the right spot. If you’re looking for a straightforward and easy way to make Instant Pot Baked Beans, this is your ticket to success.

Using some simple ingredients you likely already have on hand and some classic baked bean tie ins, you’re going to love this Instant Pot Baked Beans Recipe.

The Instant Pot is one of my favorite kitchen tools because it cuts down the cooking time and develops amazing flavors that impress everyone I cook for! If you’re like me and love showing off your cooking skills without losing your counter space for a whole day to a slow cooker, then the instant pot is for you.

Baked beans are a fantastic summer side dish. They are found at most summer barbeques because they pair well with basically every meat fresh off the barbeque!  You’re likely to see them alongside other classic summer sides, such as Spiral Pasta Salad and Sour Cream Potato Salad, and Black Bean & Corn Salsa.

What you need to make Instant Pot Baked Beans:

  • Navy Beans – These little white beans will puff up when cooked and of course turn that classic golden color once your sauce is added to the pot!
  • Water – You’ll need plenty of water to turn your dried beans into soft creamy beans!
  • Seasoning & Sauces – Flavor, flavor, flavor!
  • Bacon – Let’s be honest, baked beans are always better with bacon.  Though you could easily leave this ingredient out.
  • Yellow Onion – Sweet but flavorful!
  • Brown Sugar – This is a sweet bean recipe.  You could cut this down if you prefer your beans to be more savory than sweet.

How to make Instant Pot Baked Beans:

Step 1: Cook your beans.  Using your instant pot, means you can start with dried beans and get creamy beans in 1 hour (with pressure building and subsiding).  Say goodbye to soaking beans overnight!

Step 2: Cook your bacon & onions!  Due to the saute setting on your instant pot, you can easily cook your bacon and onions right there in the pot!

Step 3: Add you beans and seasonings into your cooked bacon and onions.  Mix it up well and cook again!

Step 4:  In 3 hours you’ll go from dried beans to flavorful baked beans ready for your dinner table!  Quick, easy and delicious!

What kind of beans are used in Instant Pot Baked Beans?

For this baked bean recipe, I am recommending Navy Beans. These beans get creamy when cooked, so they are perfect for that sweet flavor you’re looking for in a baked bean recipe. Navy beans rank highest in fiber too!

Do I need to soak beans before I add them to the Instant Pot?

Our trusty friend the Instant Pot makes it so you do not have to soak the dry beans before creating this delicious baked beans recipe. For making Instant Pot Baked Beans, you are going to cook the dry beans in the instant pot before adding the rest of the delicious ingredients.

Can I use canned beans instead of dry beans for Instant Pot Baked Beans?

Yes, you can — but with this Instant Pot Baked Beans Recipe it is just as easy to use dry beans! If you’d prefer to use canned beans, you’ll shorten your time just a bit by not needing to cook the dry beans in your Instant Pot first. Just make sure they are drained and rinsed before adding them to your pot.

How to doctor up Instant Pot Baked Beans:

  • Cook your bacon separately. This will make for crispier bacon and it tastes a little more fresh than if cooked simultaneously with the baked beans in instant pot.
  • Want to spice it up? Go ahead and add chipotle chili pepper powder or even red pepper flakes! I don’t always do this, because they can always be added on top later, but adding the spices to your instant pot baked beans recipe will make the taste even more robust.
  • Green Chiles are also a great add in to this baked beans recipe. You can pick your level of spice, but they can add a nice flavor to the mix! It is also fun to see a little pop of color shining through!

Are Instant Pot Baked Beans good for you?

Baked beans are good for your soul! But maybe they’re not the healthiest option if you’re trying to be strict with your diet. While there is certainly nothing wrong with indulging in your favorite summer side dishes from time to time, this baked bean recipe does have fats and sugars which you may be trying to avoid.

Can dogs eat baked beans?

They shouldn’t! Have you ever seen those adorable commercials where a dog is trying to share the family’s baked bean recipe? Well, I hope that dog doesn’t often taste the family’s coveted baked beans, because baked beans are not good for dogs!

A lot of the ingredients in baked beans are bad for dogs, like ketchup and tomatoes which are not great for them. Most recipes are also high in fat and sugar which also isn’t great for your furry friend to consume in large quantities!

Are baked beans gluten free?

This baked beans recipe is gluten free! All of the ingredients listed above combine to make a delicious gluten free black bean dish to serve up. Without compromising any flavor or switching out ingredients, this recipe is safe for anyone on a gluten free diet!

Can you freeze baked beans?

Definitely! Once you have fully prepared your baked beans, seal them up in air tight packaging with a little room to grow. Whether you’re using freezer bags or air tight containers, be sure to leave a little room in the top because the baked beans are likely to expand a bit while in the freezer.

When frozen properly, these baked beans can last in the freezer for 4-5 months! When you’re ready to take them out to eat, it is best to let them thaw overnight in the fridge so they can defrost slowly.  However your microwave can also help with this using the defrost button. Then just heat them up again over medium heat and they’ll be just as delicious as when they were fresh!
