Creamy chicken soup with cream cheese combines the down to earth flavor of chicken soup with the rich flavor of cream cheese.

This recipe is an easy fix for those busy weeknights. And it’s hearty and fulfilling too!

Cream cheese chicken soup is seriously a comfort food game-changer. It’s perfect for fall weather or winter months!

And you can use leftover chicken or store-bought rotisserie chicken. That speeds up the prep time, making it a breeze to prepare!

What Ingredients are in Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese?

This is such an easy recipe you can make with some shredded chicken from the grocery store.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Yellow Onion: The backbone that gives the soup depth.
  • Butter: For sautéing the onions. Yum!
  • Chicken Broth: The soulful, savory liquid that brings all the flavors together.
  • Carrots & Gold Potatoes: Hearty veggies that provide texture and substance.
  • Rotisserie Chicken: You can also make fresh chicken but why not use leftovers if possible?
  • Fresh Parsley: To introduce a pop of freshness.
  • Season Salt & Flour: Flavor enhancers and thickeners.
  • Milk: Helps in creating a creamy broth.
  • Cream Cheese: The star ingredient that provides tangy, creamy deliciousness.
  • Corn: Adds a sweet contrast.

Pro Tips:

  • Choose a full-fat cream cheese for a richer soup or a low fat cream cheese for a lighter soup.
  • You could also sauté the veggies in olive oil if you prefer that to butter.
  • Vegetable broth can be swapped for the chicken broth if desired.
  • You can use heavy cream instead of milk but I find it’s a little too creamy that way.

Can You Make Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese Ahead of Time?

You can absolutely make this delicious soup ahead of time!

In fact, I think this soup tastes even better the next day as the flavors have a chance to blend overnight.

It’s the perfect recipe for meal planning during really busy weeks.

Can You Freeze Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese?

Yes, you can freeze this creamy soup recipe.

However the melted cream cheese may separate in the freezer. When you reheat, be sure to mix really well.

Even then you may notice the texture isn’t quite what it was before you froze it. Though the flavor will still be great.

Another option is to prepare the rest of the soup, leaving out the cream cheese.

Then freeze it and when you want to eat it, take it out and heat it all up with the cream cheese.

That way it can be ready to go whenever you need it.

Always be sure to store in an airtight container for best results.

Frozen, it’ll stay good for up to three months.

How to Store Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese?

First, wait for your hot soup to cool to room temperature. This keeps the soup from sweating in your container.

Then place your soup in an airtight container and refrigerate.

It should stay fresh for about 4-5 days.

It’s actually great for meal prep because you can have it all during your work week and prepare it on Sunday night.

How to Reheat Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese?

It’s best to reheat the soup on the stove top over medium heat.

Be sure to stir occasionally to keep the creamy broth from burning.

You could also reheat in the microwave in short bursts, being sure to stir in between each heating session.

Be careful with the microwave though. You really don’t want to overdo it and have it explode all over the microwave.

What to Serve with Chicken Soup with Cream Cheese?

If all I need is a garnish, I’ll usually add some cheddar cheese or green onions on top. Super yummy!

Though a side salad or some crispy tortilla chips are good options that are really easy to throw together too.

Here are some simple side dishes that would go great with this soup:
