Who Invented Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Chocolate-dipped strawberries were invented by Lorraine Lorusso in the 1960s.

She was working at a gourmet market in Chicago when she came up with the idea.

Since then, they have become a popular treat for special occasions!

This is the history I could find on them anyway.

Though I can’t imagine people not wanting to cover strawberries in chocolate since the dawn of time!

What Ingredients Are in Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

These beautiful strawberries are the perfect chocolate strawberries!

And seriously the easiest way to impress your significant other!

  • Strawberries: Fresh, ripe, and washed. Make sure they are dry.
  • Dark Chocolate Melting Wafers: High-quality chocolate for dipping.
  • White Chocolate Melting Wafers: For drizzling and decoration.

Pro Tips:

  • Use room temperature strawberries to help the chocolate stick better.
  • The best chocolate to use is Ghirardelli in my personal opinion!
  • Try to get strawberries that are red right up to the leafy end of the strawberry.
  • Don’t forget to dry strawberries after washing them!
  • Use leftover chocolate only if it’s high quality!

How to Make Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

  1. Melt dark chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Dip strawberries into the melted chocolate.
  3. Place dipped strawberries on the wax paper to set.
  4. Melt white chocolate in a snack-size zip lock bag.
  5. Cut a tiny tip off the edge of the bag and drizzle white chocolate over the strawberries.

Pro Tips:

  • Do not refrigerate to chill. Let the chocolate set naturally at room temperature for the best results.
  • Use wax paper so the chocolate doesn’t stick to anything.
  • Melt in 30-second intervals. You don’t want to burn the chocolate!
  • Be careful not to overcook the chocolate. It should be smooth and runny.
  • Let the excess chocolate drip off before placing it on the wax paper.
  • You could also use a parchment-lined baking sheet.

How to Store Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

This chocolate-covered strawberries recipe in an airtight container.

I highly recommend you keep them at room temperature.

For best results, eat them within 1-2 days.

Though honestly, how you could resist eating them that long I would have no idea!

How Long Do Chocolate Dipped Strawberries Last?

These easy chocolate dipped strawberries are best enjoyed fresh!

Really! As soon as they are dry? Pop them in your mouth!

Though they can last up to 2 days at room temperature in an airtight container.

Can You Freeze Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

I don’t recommend freezing chocolate covered strawberries.

Actually I REALLY don’t recommend it.

Freezing can cause the strawberries to become mushy. Blah.

And the chocolate will sweat when thawed. Double blah.

Do You Refrigerate Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Yes and No. When dipping strawberries, do not put them in the fridge to set. This will cause your strawberries to sweat.

Instead let them air dry on the counter.

After they are fully dry, you’ll transfer them to the fridge.

Strawberries are a fruit that requires refrigeration or they will break down quickly.

What Chocolate Is Used for Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Use high quality chocolate for the best results!

I prefer Ghirardelli dark chocolate and white chocolate melting wafers.

But any delicious chocolate melts would work.

However, any type of chocolate will not work.

If your favorite chocolate is a tootsie roll? Sorry, but that’s a big no go!

Most chocolate bars are the same. They don’t melt as well as chocolate melts.

Avoid using chocolate chips as they may not melt smoothly either.

You could choose candy melts if you prefer.

But you definitely need something that melts well.

How to Keep Chocolate Dipped Strawberries from Sweating?

The easiest day to prevent sweating is to not chill your berries when the chocolate is setting.

It’s tempting to put them in the fridge to speed up the setting process, however I find this causes my berries to sweat.

The best thing to do is let them air dry. Then put them in the fridge.

Berries are always best day of or the next day. The longer they chill the more sweat they’ll have.

Can You Make White Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Yes, you can make white chocolate strawberries.

Simply substitute the dark chocolate with white chocolate melting wafers.

Then you can dip in the melted white chocolate.

And you can drizzle the milk chocolate or dark chocolate if you want!

What to Serve with Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Chocolate covered strawberries are great on their own and don’t need anything to help them taste better.

However if you’re serving them at an event or party, I’d suggest serving these as part of an appetizer or snack bar.

Here are some of my favorite ideas:

Are Chocolate Dipped Strawberries Healthy?

Chocolate strawberries are a sweet treat!

They contain antioxidants from the dark chocolate.

And vitamins from the strawberries!

But they’re still more of a dessert.

For a healthier option, use dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.

Then you’ve got less sugar and more goodness!

Are Chocolate Dipped Strawberries Gluten Free?

Yes, chocolate covered strawberries are naturally gluten free! Yay!

Just check that the chocolate you use is gluten free as well.

Most chocolate is, but sometimes they’re kind of sneaky about it.

So it never hurts to check!

How to Decorate Chocolate Dipped Strawberries?

Use a piping bag or a zip lock bag with a tiny tip cut off to drizzle white chocolate.

You can also sprinkle them with crushed nuts, coconut flakes, or colored sugar.

Be creative and have fun decorating!

Actually, get the kids involved in that part! They love doing that kind of stuff!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 3 minutes
Additional Time 5 minutes
Total Time 18 minutes

Instructions

  1. Lay a large piece of wax paper on your counter.
  2. Wash and dry each strawberry so it's clean.
  3. Melt dark chocolate in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds. I always use a Tupperware container because I can cover and save my chocolate for later if I don’t use it all.
  4. Mix chocolate (you won't see much of a difference, but still stir)
  5. Cook for 30 more seconds and mix again. You should see the middle is starting to melt.
  6. Cook for 30 more seconds and mix well.  Great chocolate should be slightly lumpy but as you mix the chocolate will finish melting.
  7. If your chocolate still has chunks, you can cook for an additional 15 seconds.
  8. DO NOT OVERCOOK your chocolate. It will seize and become firm and or burnt and you’ll have to start from scratch.
  9. Once chocolate is nice and runny, gently fold the green stem up to use as a handle to hold onto. Holding onto the stem, dip the strawberry into the chocolate as close to the top as you can, leaving a small ring at the top.
  10. Let excess chocolate drip off strawberry into the chocolate bowl.
  11. Set dipped strawberry on the wax paper to dry. This should take about 5 minutes, depending on how hot it is in the house.  DO NOT REFRIGERATE to chill. We want a NATURAL set for the chocolate.
  12. Continue this dipping process for all the strawberries.
  13. When all strawberries are dipped and resting, place white chocolate wafers in a snack size zip lock bag.
  14. Seal the bag.
  15. Place the bag in the microwave and try to spread out chocolate wafers in the bag.
  16. Microwave for 30 seconds.
  17. Flip bag and squish (first turn they won't be melted)
  18. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds.
  19. Flip bag and squish.  The chocolate will START to melt, but still be solid.
  20. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds.
  21. Mix bag. Chocolate should be fairly melted by this point. It will be hot. If too hot to handle, use gloves or let cool for a minute until you can handle it.
  22. Cut a TINY tip off the edge of one side of the bottom of the bag.
  23. Drizzle in a switchback zigzag from the bottom to the top of each strawberry.
