What are the Best Christmas Cookies to Gift?
The best Christmas cookies to gift are the ones with few ingredients that are simple to make! That’s because when you’re gifting cookies you are often making large batches or multiple recipes!
That all requires a lot of work and your life should be as simple as possible during this holiday season! I’m also a big fan of cookies that freeze well!
This way you can make multiple cookies in advance, freeze them and then thaw and serve and no one would be the wiser!
My favorite of all cookies are Christmas cookies with 6 ingredients or less. Because they aren’t complicated and taste delicious!
How to Package Christmas Cookies
There’s nothing better than getting a delicious package of Christmas cookies! Actually, giving a package of Christmas cookies might win!
Since it’s fun to both give and receive Christmas cookies, let’s make the wrapping fun too!
- Stack: Stack cookies in a line and wrap tightly with plastic wrap or cellophane. Then tie on a small bow!
- Mason Jars: Place cookies in a mason jar and cover the lid with decorative paper or cloth.
- Old Dishes or Plates: If you don’t have any lying around, head to your local thrift store! You can find cheap, festive or interesting dishes.
- Muffin Cups: Separate different cookie types with colorful muffin cups on a platter.
- Boxes: Cute boxes wrapped with twine or ribbon make the the perfect gift.
When you feel like you just can’t come up with an idea, head to your local grocery store. There, you’ll be sure to find holiday boxes, bags, and so many ideas you won’t be able to do them all.
And don’t forget, a paper plate wrapped with plastic wrap may not look as beautiful but the cookies will taste the same anyway! Your easy Christmas cookies should come with an easy packaging too!
Christmas Cookie Display Ideas
When you’re hosting a cookie party or serving up cookies for your holiday party, here’s a few ideas to get you started.
- Different Platters: Try using various shapes and sizes, not all the same cookie plate, to keep it interesting looking. A cookie charcuterie board is beautiful and functional.
- Vary the Height: Platters placed higher or lower will be more interesting than everything at the same level.
- Add Interesting Centerpieces: Think reds and greens! Peppermint candies, pine leaves, and holly make for beautiful and easy centerpieces.
- Mix It Up: Even if your cookies only have different colored sprinkles, it’s important to have some variety of cookies in your display.
- Don’t Overthink It: People are going to love your cookies, no matter how you display them! So don’t overthink it!
Christmas Cookie Gift Ideas
Along with your Christmas cookies, there are easy things to throw in with your gift to balance it all out. These are great for a cookie exchange party, or even leaving out for the big guy on Christmas Eve.
- Candy Canes: Peppermint candies or canes are easy to toss in and add interest to your gift.
- Hot Chocolate or Tea: They’ll appreciate the thoughtfulness of not only the cookie but the small package of hot chocolate or tea as well!
- Jar: Don’t bake your cookies but instead just give the recipe card with the ingredients in the jar. Then they can bake them when they’re ready.
- Card: Don’t forget to add a thoughtful note! It can be personalized or not, but they’ll appreciate it!
How to Store Christmas Cookies
It’s important to properly store Christmas cookies until you’re ready to give them or serve them. Keep any cookies in an airtight container. To preserve them longer you can keep them in the fridge.
Though many cookies are okay if stored on the counter as well. Just be sure to let them cool completely before transferring to your bag or container.
Can You Freeze Christmas Cookies?
Yes! Most cookies freeze well and thaw beautifully. And that’s true for Christmas cookies too! To freeze cookies, after baking, allow them to cool completely to room temperature.
It can be useful to also flash freeze the cookies by keeping them in a single layer on the baking sheet and freezing for an hour. Then transfer the cookies to a freezer safe bag.
This will keep the cookies from sticking to one another when you thaw them. Thaw in the fridge or on the counter when you’re ready to eat them.
Most of your favorite Christmas cookie recipes can even be frozen for a few months! That means you can make your easy holiday cookie recipe well in advance of when you’ll need them!
How Do I Know if My Cookies Are Done?
It can be hard to know if cookies are done, especially depending on the cookie! For lots of easy cookies, you’ll be looking for that golden brown around the edges.
You do not want the entire cookie to turn golden brown as often that means the cookie has been baked a little too long and will be hard.
Another easy way to tell can be the sheen or shine on top of cookies. If you pull your cookies out and they’re still glistening, they probably still need a couple more minutes.
Remember, homemade cookies often continue to cook after you pull them out. So often it’s best to follow the recipe, even if they seem not totally baked as they’ll firm up on the counter.
That way your sweet treat will stay soft and delicious! Though remember, some cookies are also hard. Often cookies that are cut with a rolled with a rolling pin and cut with a cookie cutter are that way.
If your cookies are meant to be hard cookies, then don’t undercook them! Following the recipe is the best way to make sure you get the right texture for your cookies.
Can I Leave Cookies Out Overnight?
That depends on the cookie! In most cases, the answer is no. Cookies often harden, spoil, or are just plain less than desirable after a night on the counter.
However, some cookies, such as no bake cookies, require a while to sit on the counter to cool. In that case, you can often bake in the evening and transfer to your container in the morning.
