Believe it or not, these Peanut Butter, Caramel Pretzel Bites came about more out of desperation than inspiration!

Over the past 3 weeks, I’ve made 6 full batches of caramels.

I’ve been experimenting with a variety of cooking temperatures and ingredients to come up with a winning combination in terms of homemade caramels.

And after 6 batches, I believe I have the perfect old fashioned homemade caramel recipe

Each batch makes a TON of caramels.

At first we loved eating them.

However after a while, you have to start getting creative on what you are going to do with all these caramels.

We’ve done plain caramel, salted caramels, chocolate dipped salted caramels and now these Peanut Butter, Caramel & Pretzel Bites.

I started to think about my Husbands favorite candy bar, the Take 5 Candy Bar.

Take 5’s have pretzel, caramel, peanut butter, salted peanuts and chocolate.

If you make these with chunky peanut butter, you’ll have the perfect combination for a Take 5 Candy Bar.

I however only had creamy on hand so that is what I used.

I used my homemade caramels, and now we are hooked on them.

The crunchy salty pretzels mixed with the sweet caramels and creamy peanut butter makes a tasty combination.

Dipping them in chocolate helps hold them together and keeps the peanut butter from squishing out.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we decided these would be a perfect Valentines Treat!

Instead of buying your Sweetheart a box of chocolates, why not make them one?

However you don’t need to make your own caramels to whip these up!

I only did because I had caramels coming out of my ears!

You can definitely use store bought caramels cut in half so they aren’t quite so thick!

These Peanut Butter, Caramel & Pretzel bites were a huge hit in our house, as well as with our friends and family.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour

Ingredients

  • Square Pretzels
  • 15 Unwrapped Caramels
  • Peanut Butter, creamy or crunchy - your choice!
  • White Melting Chocolate
  • 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Candy sprinkles or colored sugar.

Instructions

  1. Place 60 unbroken square pretzels on your work surface.
  2. Turn each unwrapped caramel on its side and slice in half. This should give you two square caramels per piece for a total of 30. Place each half on an empty pretzel. Continue doing this until all 15 caramels are cut in half and placed on pretzels.
  3. Cook caramels on pretzels in the microwave for 5 seconds and press caramel into pretzel. If caramel will not press into pretzel, cook for additional 5 seconds. Caramel should not be melted, just soft enough to press into the pretzel so they stick together. You'll need to do this in batches.
  4. On remaining 30 pretzels, smear each one with peanut butter.
  5. Press a peanut butter half pretzel into a caramel half pretzel. Do this to all. You should have 30 peanut butter pretzel sandwiches at this point.
  6. Melt chocolate according to package directions.
  7. Add vegetable oil to thin the chocolate slightly after it's melted.
  8. Place pretzel sandwiches into white chocolate and with a fork gently pick each one up and shake it gently to remove excess chocolate.
  9. Place Pretzel bites on wax paper, non-stick foil or a baking mat to cool and dry.
  10. Sprinkle candy bits, sprinkles or colored sugar on top of each one as you finish, before they dry.
  11. Repeat until all 30 pretzel bites are dipped.
  12. Allow to dry fully and devour!
