Christmas brings a spirit of excitement, wonder and joy.  However, after Christmas the enormous task of taking down all the decorations, removing the tree and settling into a new year brings an all time low for my Children.

The questions of how long until it’s Christmas again and when is the next holiday spring into our vocabulary.

Lucky for us, the winter and spring months bring a flurry of new holidays and exciting adventures.  This helps take the edge off those post holiday blues.

Valentine’s is a fun and exciting holiday in our home.  Every year we do things slightly different, but one tradition that has stuck is Cupid.

Valentine’s is a fun and exciting holiday in our home.  Every year we do things slightly different, but one tradition that has stuck is Cupid.

Cupid likes to come and check in on us regularly during the days leading up to Valentine’s. Cupid and other characters have been a fun addition and tradition to our home.  The kids look forward to when he visits, what exciting things he might do and try a little harder to be kinder to one another in hopes that Cupid will notice.

In past years, Cupid has turned our milk into pink strawberry milk, made us pink pancakes, left heart shaped treats for us to enjoy and heart attacked our rooms.  Cupid is someone who always is kind and sweet and does loving things.  And so, leading up to Valentine’s Day, we look forward to a visit or two from Cupid with several fun things that he will do come the actual holiday.

The one thing about Cupid is that he wont visit if we aren’t kind.  He can only visit when the atmosphere of the home is happy, kind and of course loving!

Many years ago, when my daughter was 2, we did little things like this leading up to Valentines Day.  She loved it.  As she got older and discovered who Santa Clause was, she then told us it was one of Santa’s elves who did all these kind things.  So as to not confuse the Holidays, we told her about Cupid and ever since then, it’s been Cupid who has visited us.

Just about every major holiday has a character that comes to visit and a characteristic of that character.  For cupid is love, kindness and pink.

Not only does Cupid come to visit us, he also inspires us to be more creative leading up to the Holiday.

My daughter has been BEGGING for quite some time now for me to make Oreo Cookie Truffles.  She loves them (as do all of us) and instead of making classic round balls we decided to have a little fun and make  Homemade Oreo Truffle Hearts.

We attempted two different versions and though they both turned out really cute, our favorites ended up being the easier to make ones!  You can make these either way and I’ll describe them both below.  However the recipe itself will only be our favorite version.

Oreo Truffle Hearts

Oreo Truffle Hearts Option 1:

The pink Oreo truffles in the photos were more difficult to create.  The upside to making these is that you can get those lovely imprints of words and designs, giving your truffle and clean and polished look.

The downside is that the bottom of the Oreo Truffle Balls in most of them were left exposed and not covered in chocolate.  This can be fixed but was something that I didn’t expect the first time.

To make these, you’ll want to start off with a few silicone heart molds.  These can be found online or in a craft store around the Holiday.

Melt your candy melts according to package directions.  If you want a pink color then mix a few red melts in with while chocolate melts.

Pour chocolate into each mold and spread it around.  Let it sit for 1 – 2 minutes then flip molds over and let excess chocolate drip out.

As the chocolate dries, make your Oreo Truffle mixture.

Once Chocolate is dry, push a bit of your truffle mixture into your mold, squishing it around to fill the space.  Remove any extra as you don’t want it to exceed the mold. In fact you want it to be a little less than the mold so that your chocolate can still fit in on top.

The Key to making this style work, which I didn’t realize my first time, is that you also want to make sure that you have a tiny open space all around the mold so the chocolate can slide into the sides as well as on top.  A butter knife will do great.  Gently slide your knife all around your truffle mixture (not around the bottom chocolate).

Now pour a small amount of chocolate on top.  Ensuring that chocolate can fit in those tiny spaces along the outside edge of your heart sealing up the truffle bits.

Allow to dry fully then pop out of mold and cut off any excess chocolate.

Oreo Truffle Hearts Option 2:

This is our favorite quick method.  For these hearts I used heart shaped silicone ice cube trays.  I found these a while back at Ikea and thought they might work great for a random project one day.  So glad I nabbed them as they were perfect for these truffles.  They were small enough to be the right size for this rich truffle!

Make Oreo Truffles Recipe Mixture.

Push truffle mixture into each of your silicone hearts, squishing around until it fills the space.  Scrape away any excess.

Freeze hearts for 30 minutes or until hard.

Melt chocolate according to package directions.

Pull truffles out of freezer. Pop truffles out of ice cube tray by flipping tray upside down and gently pushing on silicone side.  Be careful in doing this.  The harder you push the more of dent your finger will press into the solid truffle.

Once truffles have been removed, dip truffles into chocolate and place on wax paper or non-stick foil.

If using sprinkles then add them immediately after each dipped truffle.  Because the truffles are so cold, the chocolate will set very quickly, so add sprinkles while it’s still wet.

Once all truffles are dipped and dry, you can drizzle with a second color if you desire.

As you can see, making homemade Oreo Truffle Hearts aren’t just easy, they are also delicious!  Making them into a heart shape isn’t difficult and adds a lot of fun character to your treat.  These make fun treats for a teacher, neighbor or your fun Valentine’s Party!  Don’t be afraid.  My 5 year old loved doing this (and taste testing) and I suspect your child will too!
