Bagel Chips – Air Fryer & Oven Methods

Sharing is caring!

Quick and easy Bagel Chips can be made in the oven or air fryer.  Use any flavor of bagel, though we love the flavors of Plain Bagel Chips and Everything Bagel Chips.

Bagel Chips

In recent months I’ve found myself eating a lot of bagels.

Don’t get me wrong, I love bagels.  Toasted with cream cheese is a favorite breakfast, snack and sometimes lunch for me.

My husbands favorite is the Everything Bagel.  I however don’t have a favorite.  Plain with a fruity cream cheese or fruity bagel with a plain cream cheese are all good in my book.

I’ve even been known to indulge in a cheese bagel toasted with butter.

However recently I decided to see what else I can do with an ordinary bagel.

What can I transform this bagel into.

Growing up, I was in love with a local deli that would make bagel sandwiches.  Savory bagels filled with meats and cheeses were a regular go to meal for me.

But what else? What else could I transform a bagel into?

My husband and I have been talking about this idea for a while now.  And one of the many ideas that we came up with were homemade Bagel Chips.

Bagel Chips

The idea comes from the simple thought of thinking of a bagel as an ordinary bread product.

If Pitas can turn into pita chips, and tortillas can turn into tortilla chips, then why can’t bagels be turned into homemade bagel chips?  And if you make bagel chips, would they be too dense?  Would they turn rubbery or weird?

And of course, if the baked bagel chip recipe turned out to taste great, then what do you serve with it?

So after thoroughly scrutinizing and over thinking the entire process, we decided to quit talking about it and make them.

Bagel Chips

We started off by doing a test batch in the oven.  The first batch was great but a bit too crisp.  The second batch were dead on for texture and flavor.

Keep in mind that your texture preference might be different than mine.  So if you think they are too chewy, bake them longer. If you think they are too crispy, bake them less.  You get the idea.

Anyway, we ended up loving this baked Bagel Chip recipe.  My husband likes them crispy.  I like them crispy but with a hint of chew.

After making a few batches we then decided to try making some in our new air fryer!

Have you hopped onto the Air Fryer trend?  We splurged this year and bought ourselves one.  And so far I find myself using it several times a week.

Let’s be honest, right now we are in the experimental phase.  We keep trying new recipes and cooking new foods in it to see what we like. And so far we’ve been really impressed!

These Bagel Chips turned out PERFECT in the air fryer!  The only downside to the air fryer is that you can’t bake as many at a time as you can in the oven.

However if you just want bagel chips for yourself or a small gathering then go for it.

OR if your oven is broken, the air fryer is your new best friend.  It’s also fantastic for reheating foods and crisping them up – and can generally do it faster and better than an oven and toaster oven!

After using this Air Fryer several times, I’m going to have to say it’s the perfect item for a single college student, single adult or couple.

Families like mine can use this too and create amazing meals in it or side dishes.

I’m sure at some point we’ll find something we don’t like to make in the air fryer, but so far it’s done well with all the things we’ve tried!

What is an Air Fryer?

In a nutshell, an air fryer is a mini convection oven.  Small enough to sit on your stove, it cooks food quickly, crisps up foods and can give some foods the texture of deep fried but without the extra oil.

There is a heating element on top of the mini oven and as it cooks, a fan pushes the hot air all around the food, giving it an all over even cooking.

The basket sits above the base and has holes and slits throughout.  This allows for the air to thoroughly be pushed around your food.  However you can cook greasy foods on foil or even in an oven safe dish!

What can I cook in an Air Fryer?

There are some things you cannot cook in an air fryer.  Wet foods that you’d normally fry are not right for an air fryer.  Think tempura battered items or funnel cake.

However foods like chicken wings, cakes, meatballs, hot dogs, chips, french fries, vegetables, meats – all cook up great in an air fryer!

What kind of bagels should I use?

When it comes to what flavor of bagel you should make for your Bagel Chips, I suggest thinking of this with the end in mind.

What kind of dip will you be offering?  A fruity dip or a savory dip?

Then decide what kind of bagel would work well with that dip.

What dip would work well with Bagel Chips?

That depends on the kind of bagels you make.

A fruit dip like a fruit fluff or yogurt dip would work well with a fruit bagel or plain bagel.

However if  you plan on making a savory dip like a spinach artichoke dip, or Jalapeno Popper Dip, then a plain bagel, everything bagel or even a cheese bagel might be the right fit.

My husband’s favorite bagel is the Everything Bagel.  And so that’s why we choose that one.  We had two dips to enjoy with our Everything Bagel Chips.  A spinach artichoke dip as well as a southwestern dip.  Both tasted fantastic with the Everything Bagel dip.

However you can definitely serve any dip with a bagel chip.  Just use them instead of chips or pretzels.

Bagel chips are one of my favorite things to eat. You don't need much time for preparation and the air fryer makes them wonderful.
