Afton Apple Orchard is definitely a hike for anyone in Central Minnesota.  We just happened be down that way for a wedding and decided to stop over and check it out.

We did both the farm and the corn maze and for our little family of 4, it cost us $41.  Keep in mind that was for 1 adult, 2 paid children and 1 free child.

In terms of apple orchards we’ve been to before, it really wasn’t special.  We were there on a Friday and though most of the fun events and extra activities are reserved for the weekend, we still felt like it was just OK in terms of things to do at the farm.  There weren’t trains or apple cannons and no corn pits or train rides.

When you go to Afton Apple Orchard you’re stepping onto 250+ acres of beautiful land that is ready to welcome your family.

Despite not having a lot of extra activities we’ve come to get used to at orchards, the main feature of this farm, aside from apples and pumpkins, is the giant outdoor activity area for kids.

This alone is worth the $5 entry fee.  My kids played for HOURS and were so sad when we had to leave.  In fact my son keeps asking us this year if we can go back for the tire hill!

It’s better than 99% of the parks we’ve been to with multiples of everything to avoid long lines for kids or over crowding.

Slides in a variety of shapes and sizes, tunnels, climbing hills, fort, swings and so much more!  Parent’s don’t be shy about joining you child in some good old fashioned fun!

If you have a high energy child, this is definitely the place to bring them!

The other main feature at this farm were the animals.  They did have several animals you could pet as well as coin operated machines that you could purchase food for the animals.  I also appreciated that they had plenty of hand sanitizer dispensers for afterwards.

Once you’re worn out from playing, hop on the free wagon and go for a ride.  Feel free to stop off at the pumpkin patch to grab your favorite one or stop to pick apples.  Or if you’re like us, we were too tired and just enjoyed the ride!

Overall we give this orchard a thumbs up!

Apple Orchard:

There are several varieties of apples you can pick. Or they have pre-picked apples in the shop.  To get to the trees, hop on the hay wagon and hitch a ride to the section you want to pick.

Apples ripen at different times, so call before picking to see if your favorites are ripe and ready! The price of apples at Afton Apple Orchard are $2.39 per pound – $2.99 per pound, depending on the variety.

Apple varieties they grow on their farm are:

  • Paula Red
  • Zestar
  • Red Baron
  • Estival

  • River Belle
  • Sweet 16
  • Cortland
  • Spartan

Corn Maze:

The Afton Apple Orchard Corn Maze is completely separate from the farm.  In fact it’s so separate you’ll have to drive over to it and park.  The cost of the corn maze is separate from your entrance onto the farm.

Cost: Adults 11 years old and older – $10 per person.  Children ages 3 – 10 – $8.00 per person.  Children 2 and under are FREE.

I’ve got to be completely honest and say this is definitely the largest corn maze I’ve ever been to.  It’s 15 acres with over 6 miles of walking – if you were to go into every nook and cranny.

The entire maze is split into 3 sections and you could definitely hang out in this for several hours.

  • Phase 1 – this is perfect for anyone who gets lost in a maze and young children.  We were able to do this in 30 minutes or less.
  • Phase 2 – This was a little bit harder and to be honest after getting lost in the maze we somehow came out the entrance.  But we all had fun trying to figure it out!
  • Phase 3 – This one is definitely hard.  We were short on time and our stroller was having a hard time on the bumpy route.  So we bailed early on this one.

In addition to the three corn mazes you can also find a straw bale maze, a rubber hose maze and a rope maze – all included in the price.

Pumpkin Patch:

Pumpkins are available for you pick in the pumpkin patch or they also  have some pre picked ones you can enjoy!
