These Banana Oatmeal Cookies with chocolate chips are so good we eat them for Breakfast AND Dessert! Imagine the flavors of banana bread, oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip cookies all rolled into one?  Is your mouth watering yet, because mine is!

This one is for all my cookie lovers out there! I know you are just dying to try a new cookie recipe to mix it up a little. Lucky for you not only are these cookies soft and melt in your mouth, they’re healthy! Well at least I like to think so.

Bananas and oatmeal make a cookie healthy right? Who wouldn’t want to eat a healthy cookie that just falls apart in your mouth?

Plus Banana and chocolate are always a great combination so why not try these!  These Banana Oatmeal Cookies are definitely a favorite of my kids, which makes them a favorite of mine!   They are pretty simple to make and you will have to hide them from sneaky hands!

I love these Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies because I always have bananas lying around my kitchen. I have so many I sometimes don’t know what to do with them all.

I love making banana bread, but cookies just taste even better! If you are needing some new ideas on what to do with your browning bananas, definitely give these cookies a try. You will not be disappointed!

How to make Banana Oatmeal Cookies:

These healthy banana oatmeal cookies don’t just make themselves ( I wish) so you will need to make sure you have a few ingredients lying around the kitchen in order to make them come to life! Here is what you are going to need:

  • Butter: This will definitely add to the flavor and will create that ‘melt in your mouth’ texture.
  • Brown Sugar: This will make your cookies softer and chewier!
  • Granulated Sugar: Is there really such a thing as too much sugar?
  • Large Bananas: It’s not banana cookies without them! The ripper the better!
  • Eggs: Eggs are extremely important in the chemistry of cooking. Without it there would be no structure in your batter.
  • Vanilla: This will help with enhancing the flavor!
  • Salt: Salt seems to be in everything right? It’s because it makes everything taste better!
  • Baking Soda: Gives the cookies a little oomph!
  • Cinnamon: A good way to spice up the flavor!
  • All Purpose Flour: This is super important for making any kind of batter.
  • Quick Oats: These will make your cookies softer and chewier.
  • Chocolate Chips: Who doesn’t love chocolate in their cookies? I use semi sweet, you are welcome to use any type of chocolate you find!

Pro Tip:

  • If you want your banana oatmeal chocolate chip cookies to be softer leave them in the oven for less time. To make them crunchier leave them in the oven slightly longer.
  • Put a couple extra chocolate chips on top of your cookie balls before you stick them in the oven to make them look a little nicer.

Can I make these with whole wheat Flour?

You can definitely give it a try with whole wheat flour. I have found out that it doesn’t give the same soft, chewy texture that you get with using white flour. I personally like using the all purpose flour, but I have heard from others that it works great for them.

Can I use rolled oats instead of quick oats?

Yes, you can of course use rolled oats as an alternative. Rolled oats won’t make the texture of the cookies as soft as they would be with the quick oats. Rolled oats are still great to use and are what are traditionally used in oatmeal cookies.

Can I freeze the dough in the freezer?

Yes, you most certainly can freeze the dough for a later time. Just like most things, make sure you put the dough in an airtight container, or a ziplock bag, before you freeze it. When you are ready to cook up some tasty cookies, let the dough thaw out before sticking it in the oven.

Pro Tip:

  • Scoop your cookies before you freeze them.  Scoop the cookies onto a cookie tray and freeze them. Once frozen you can pop them into a freezer bag for future use.  Place on lined cookie sheet, allow to come to room temperature and bake as directed.
  • You can also freeze the baked cookies for a quick morning breakfast for late night snack on a future date!

I like this recipe! I did modified it a little bit by using only 1/2 cup of butter but adding 1/4 cup of plain greek yogurt and using a mix of wheat flour and all-purpose. I also used old fashioned oats but pulsed it a little bit in the food processor before adding it to the batter. They are very yummy! Another good recipe to use brown bananas :)

Is it just 1 cup of oats? The instructions make it sound like it should be more?
